May Newsletter: Pilates Principle CONTROL
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about control—how easy it is to try to hold everything together when life feels uncertain or overwhelming. We tighten our grip, trying to manage all the moving pieces, hoping it will bring a sense of stability.
But more often than not, true ease comes not from controlling everything around us, but from learning what to hold onto… and what to let go of.
This brings us to this month’s Pilates principle: Control.
In Pilates, control isn’t about restriction or rigidity—it’s about moving with intention and awareness. It’s understanding where movement is coming from and how your body is supporting it.
For example, performing the Hundred by simply moving your arms is very different from initiating the movement from your back and core. That deeper connection is what allows the exercise to truly build strength and support your body.
The same is true when working with the springs. It’s one thing to move them—but it’s another to control them, both as you press out and as you return. That balance of effort and resistance is where real strength is developed.
Control, in this way, becomes empowering—not overwhelming. It’s not about doing everything perfectly, but about meeting your body where it is and moving with as much intention as you can in that moment… while also letting go of what isn’t serving you.
As you come into your practice this month, I invite you to explore that balance:Where can you create more awareness? Where can you soften unnecessary tension?Where can you find control—and where can you let go?
Sometimes, the greatest strength comes not from doing more, but from doing things with greater intention and trust.
We’re so grateful to continue this journey with you. 🤍
