March Newsletter- Pilates Principles: Breathing

Hello! Happy March 🌷

With spring just around the corner, there’s a subtle shift happening—longer days, a little more light, and maybe even a bit more energy. It feels like the perfect time to continue our exploration of the Principles of Pilates.

Last month, we focused on Concentration—the practice of truly tuning in and giving your full attention to your movement.

This month, we’re building on that foundation with the next principle: Breathing.

Breath is something we do all day, every day—without thinking about it. But in Pilates, breathing becomes intentional. It supports the movement, stabilizes the core, and helps create space and length in the body.

When we focus on our breath in class, a few powerful things happen:

  • We engage our deep core muscles more effectively

  • We reduce unnecessary tension (especially in the neck and shoulders)

  • We support mobility in the rib cage and spine

  • We calm and regulate the nervous system

Breath is often the missing piece when something feels challenging. If an exercise feels tense or overwhelming, returning to your breath can create more control and ease.

And just like Concentration, Breathing brings us back to the present moment. It quiets the mental noise and anchors us in our bodies.

As you move through your classes this month, I encourage you to notice your breath. Is it shallow? Are you holding it? Can you fully exhale?

Sometimes the smallest shift—a deeper inhale, a slower exhale—can change everything.

Here’s to moving with intention, breathing with awareness, and continuing to build strength from the inside out.

We’re so grateful to practice with you.
